ABSTRACT:The Lady of the Camellias is written by the well-known French novelist Alexandre Dumas, fils. Marguerite is the heroin in the Lady of the Camellias who is a courtesan, but sacrifices herself to perfect others’ happiness. This thesis aims to analyze the rebellion and avoidance in Marguerite’s personality with Freud’s personality structure. Moreover, this paper aims to get a conclusion that Marguerite's personality is one of the most important reasons to cause her tragedy which results from the imbalance of her id, ego and superego. Through the study of this paper, it is hoped that readers of this paper can have a further understanding of the heroin’s personality and arise their concerns about their internal world. Meanwhile, through the analysis of Marguerite’s personality, the Freud’s personality structure can be interpreted well.
