Abstract：Jack London is one of the most popular and most successful realistic writers in America in  the early 20th Century. The Call of the Wild is Jack London's most-read book, and it is generally considered as one of the best novels in the early twentieth–century America.The novel has received great and unprecedented attention ever since its first publication in 1903.The intention of the paper is to reveal the complex and multiple character of Buck, and to explore the impact of his character on his fate. Analyzing the multiple role and complex character of Buck leads to a better understanding of the image of Buck. Through the shaping of Buck's character, readers can go through the whole novel and have a more profound comprehension of the theme and soul of the novel. The paper will discuss Buck's character from four different types of traits and their corresponding related roles of the hero. The hero and its character are the main factors that make the novel world famous and perpetual.
