Abstract:This study aims to analyze the different female characters created by Fitzgerald and Hemingway. Both Fitzgerald and Hemingway are representatives of “the Lost Generation” in the 1920s. Fitzgerald’s female characters usually symbolize the New Women with dual personalities. Besides, these characters are demonized for their transformation from angel to devil. Hemingway’s female characters are classified as either good or bad. The good women are the embodiment of the unreal perfect women and idealized by him. Then the essay elaborates on reasons for their characterization of different female characters: their different experiences in adulthood and marriage life. The paper concludes that Fitzgerald has mixed love-hate feelings about his female characters but Hemingway prefers the good women who are idealized to the bad women who dominate men.
