Abstract
Gone with the Wind is a fantastic long novel created by a famous American novelist Margaret Mitchel who set the civil war as the background of the fiction. Gone with the Wind was the only novel created by Margaret Mitchel, but it established her unshakable position in the history of world literature. The novel has caused a great sensation since it was published in 1936 and it got a Pulitzer Prize for literature in the next year. The novel won eight Oscars in a short time after it was adapted to a film. Using the emotional entanglements as links, most of the story started around Scalett’s life. Under the background of the American civil war, Scalett became a representative of New Women by her brave, rebellious and tough spirit.
Since the novel came out, many scholars have interpreted it based on feminism, ecological criticism, psychoanalysis and other theories, from the perspective of personal character, themes, interpersonal relationship, historical and cultural background, etc. However, few scholars analyzed the tight relationship between women and nature from the angle of ecofeminism. The first chapter of this thesis will briefly introduce the writer, content, plot, writing background and so on. The second chapter will introduce the definition, development and characteristics of ecofeminism. The third chapter is the mainbody of the thesis and it will analyze the common fate of women and nature by focusing on their common status as the marginalized and their common fate as victims. The fourth chapter will elaborate on the harmony between women and nature by pointing out that women are the protectors of nature and nature is the source of strength for women. Finally, the paper will make a conclusion.
