Abstract
As the world’s two most influential languages, a great number of loan words are widely introduced and applied in them owing to the differences in history, culture as well as traditions. Thus, loan words come into being, which are also known as borrowing words. With the globalization of English, English variants with local characteristics have occurred in different countries and regions. This is called English localization, a regeneration process in English language and culture in fact. During recent decades, there’s increasingly frequent communications among different countries, and thus making language contact and impacts on each other more pronounced, which turns this kind of related projects to heated research directions. Both Chinese loan words in English and English loan words in Chinese are outcomes of cultural contact and integration. It is universally acknowledged that loan words are not only a tendency of language development but also a symbol of cultural integration. Loan words are equipped with understandability, acceptability, regularity and rationalization as expected.
Based on basic principles of comparative linguistics, semantics as well as translation studies, this paper makes initial analysis and comparison between the application of loan words in two languages in terms of sources, reasons, forming methods, characteristics and influences. Thus, we draw the conclusions as follows: we are situated in a cultural melting pot. Therefore, an inclusive attitude towards loan words is supposed to be adopted, especially to spread Chinese culture with this method. People don’t need to worry about the language foreignization since loan words merely take up a minor ratio and won’t change the mainstream of Chinese language. With the rapid development of technology and more frequent international communications, loan words are gradually taking on superiority and convenience. Consequently, we are supposed to apply loan words into practical use actively and reasonably on the basis of language developing rules.
