Abstract:Oliver Twist is one of the most famous novels of Charles Dickens. Charles Dickens was the most popular British novelist of the Victorian era, and he was the greatest British realistic novelist. Oliver Twist, published in 1838, is one of Charles Dickens’s realistic novels. The foggy city, London as the background, this novel tells a story of an orphan’s miserable life and experience. The protagonist Oliver grows up in an orphanage. After an apprenticeship, he has a hard flight and drops into a den of thieves. Then he is forced to be a member of vicious villains and he goes through many hardships. At last, with the help of kind people, he identifies himself and lives a happy life. From this paper, through different kinds of people, we can know better about Oliver. In this paper, we will introduce Dickens briefly. Next, we will give a short introduction about main plots of Oliver Twist. Then, we shall discuss the different personality traits of those main people in this novel and also some short comments about those minor roles. At last, we will analysis the social features in Oliver Twist.

　　　Through the essay, we can know the realistic life of the poor in the 19th century of England. Such kind of analysis will provide an insight for us to keep a positive attitude towards life.
