Abstract:As is well-known to all, the Bible has a profound impact on literature in the west. Devil Satan has long been a prototype of devil in the emerging and evolving process of literature with its literary images becoming increasingly full and complex. It is the most typical sinner in the west. Regarded as the evil criminal who lures people to darkness and corruption, Satan will always be God's curse. Both Satan’s character and its personality deserve our deep inspection. Also, Satans created in four different periods in western literary history offer us a sight into the formation of the image as well as the development of its trajectory. The meaning behind the image of Satan helps us further understand and deepen our appreciation of the culture of Western literary and the ideology of the Christian, which enables us to study English literature in a better way. This thesis aims to discuss the image of Satan mainly based on three masterpieces: the Bible, the Divine Comedy and Paradise Lost as well as some recent works. As long as Literature does not stop exploring the dialectical relationship between virtue and vice, the image of Satan will continue to enrich human’s understanding of the world and of themselves.

From the fallen angels, heinous devil to humanity, the image of Satan has been repeatedly re-interpreted. As long as it is based on the deep thinking of the dialectical relationship between good and evil, Satan will never be ignored by literary writers. Western literature has long been concerned about the development of human nature, which makes Satan the prototype of the most complex performance. As long as there is evil in this world, as long as humans do not give up the research of human nature and morality, Satan will not fade out in the vision of literature. He will continue participating in the drama of our times so as to enrich our understanding of ourselves and the world.
