Abstract: Different cultural backgrounds between Chinese and western countries often lead to the deviations in the understanding of a film and cause problems in film subtitle translation. It is especially highlight the importance of studying film subtitle translation from the perspective of cultural differences. This thesis discusses the influences on subtitle translation caused by cultural differences from the aspects of religion, social conventions and different thinking patterns. To avoid the loss of cultural information in the films and bridge cross-cultural communication, four film subtitle translation strategies are put forward with the analysis of specific cases from films about cultural differences. They are literal translation, free translation, addition and omission.
