ABSTRACT
In recent years, the entertaining tendency has become increasingly obvious in the film industry and this kind of tendency is reflected not only in the contents of films but also in the translation of the subtitles.
The entertainment tendency is influenced more or less by many factors. This paper focuses on the four most important ones: the drive of economic benefits, the acceptance of the audience, the entertaining function of the films and the influence of ideology. Translators use a variety of methods to increase the entertaining function of the films, such as the adoption of widely used cyber words or popular words, the use of ancient poems and the celebrities’ names and even the complete rewriting. These methods undoubtedly increase the sense of humor in the film subtitle translation and help films attract more audiences.
Through studying the subtitle translation of English films, the dissertation attempts to draw people’s attention to the entertaining tendency in the translation of English film subtitle and use the entertaining methods in the translations with appropriate restraints.
