Abstract
With the improvement of China’s international status and comprehensive national strength, people from different countries are very concerned about China’s development, not only in politics, but also in society, culture, finance, etc.. As a form of official documents of the People’s Republic of China, Government Work Report (GWR) plays an essential part in expounding China to people from the world. Thus its translation should be paid more attention to because it not only delivers information, but also affects China’s international image directly. Meanwhile, there are many four-character phrases in GWR which poses a great challenge for translators. The use of four-character structure is a kind of unique culture in China, but it is unfamiliar to foreigners and would be a barrier to cross-culture communication.
This paper will analyze the translation of four-character phrases in GWR 2015 from the perspective of functional equivalence put forward by Eugene Nida and propose four translation skills, including literal translation, free translation, omission and amplification, hoping it could be of certain help to the translation of GWR.
Key words: GWR 2015; four-character phrases; C-E translation; functional equivalence
