Abstract
Our country constantly carries out the educational reform to meet the demands of social development. The educators badly need to pursue quality-oriented education and all-round teaching. With the advent of the information age and global economy, English has become increasingly important and the most widely spoken language in the world. Taking the middle school English teaching as an example, in middle school English teaching, teachers should cultivate students’ comprehensive language competence, including having good command of English in listening, speaking, reading and writing skills, in order to change the common phenomenon called “high scores but low abilities” in English learning.
This thesis aims to seek some effective supplementary means except normal teaching modes to help students improve their English comprehensive competence. The research methods consist of observation, interview, and literature research. By means of observation, interview and literature research, the thesis analyzes the causes of some deficiencies in middle school English teaching and learning procedure and their consequences. Then thesis offers some effective solutions to the problems, and here are five examples included in this paper, Daily reports, English broadcasts, English movies, English songs and magazines.
The thesis makes a survey of two classes in a middle school, testing the positive effects of these different supplementary means on students’ English abilities. With the help of the input hypothesis and output hypothesis, the thesis makes a thorough and scientific analysis of the results.
