Abstract:This thesis is devoted to carrying out a deeper investigation into the current situation of English vocabulary teaching in junior high school. Vocabulary is central to English teaching because without sufficient vocabulary student cannot understand others or express their own ideas. Wilkins wrote that “…while without grammar very little can be conveyed, without vocabulary nothing can be conveyed.” From the author adopted the methods of questionnaire and interview to investigate the first-grade students and teachers of Fuhui junior school in Lijiang city we can know that teachers paid no attention to vocabulary teaching and have no adopt various teaching methods in English teaching, so students’ vocabulary learning methods are so rigid. The author will provide new methods for current situation of vocabulary teaching and learning in Lijiang and hope to be good for vocabulary teaching and learning.
Due to the restrictions of current conditions and the author’s capability, such as the short investigation time, the existence of uncontrollable variables as well as the incomplete processing and analysis of data, this research have some inevitable limitations. Great efforts need to be taken to the further study and exploration.
