Abstract

In The Old Man and Sea, Santiago, the brilliant combination of mature, hero, tough guy, always keeps elegant characteristics under great pressure at times of the lost generation. He is simple, poor but not shabby, modest but not humble. In the face of difficulties, he acquits himself calmly, bravely and never yields to hardship. This dissertation, starting from the background of this novel, mainly analyzes Santiago’s characteristics and makes further exploration to the causes of the formation of the personality from several aspects and thus makes rational thinking of the background of this era and Hemingway’s life.
