Abstract: Explicitation refers to addition and adjustment, etc. in translation to make the target text more fluent, and the meaning of the source text more prominent. Explicitation is a widespread practice in the translation, especially in the Chinese-English translation. The paper is a tentative study of explicitation illustrated by the case of Chinese-English translation. The paper first reviews the development of explication research in translation of foreign scholars, with the aim at revealing its universality, then the author, based on Claudy’s, classifies explication as obligatory and non-obligatory, illustrating them by the case of C-E translation, and at last reveals the cause of explication from the author’s viewpoint, at the same time, suggests redundant explicitation should be avoided in translation.
