INTRODUCTION
A Strange Disappearance was a detective novel written by Anna Katharine Green who was an American poet and novelist. She was one of the first detective stories writers in America. She was known as “the mother of the detective novel”.
A Strange Disappearance was Green’s second book. The story was centered around the strange disappearance of a girl. The author mainly depicted how the detective investigated the case and got the information step by step in order to solve the case. In this process, the author attached much importance to the portrait of characters as well as the arrangement of plots.
The third chapter: Mr. Gryce saw a dress of dark blue silk and a collar of exquisite lace in Emily’s bureau drawer. The two things made him confused because he didn't think that a sewing girl was possible to possess such rich things. In order to gain more information, “I” entered Mr. Blake’s room and saw a portrait of a woman. But Mrs. Daniels found “me”, after “I” asked her who the woman was, “I” knew she was Mr. Blake’s cousin. Subsequently, “I” heard the conversation between Mr. Blake and Mrs. Daniels. From their conversation, “I” felt it seemed Mrs. Daniels wanted to conceal something.
The fourth chapter: Mr. Gryce tried to ask Mr. Blake several questions about the girl, but he failed to get any information. He gave this case to me and “I” started my investigation. “I” heard of Thompson’s story. Two men, a woman and even Mr. Blake were involved into this story. “I” felt Mr. Blake became more and more suspicious. “My” next move was to inquire more facts about Mr. Blake. During the investigation, someone told me Mr. Blake showed considerable considerations to his cousin, Evelyn ever, but their relationship was bad at present. In addition, “I” was sure Evelyn was the woman “I” saw in the portrait of Mr. Blake’s room.
The fifth chapter: “I” followed Mr. Blake and went to a Charity Ball. Evelyn Blake also appeared at the Ball. They met and talked with each other. “I” caught their conversation and knew that Evelyn and Mr. Blake fell in love with each other before, however she betrayed Mr. Blake for titles and jewels. That’s why their relationship was bad.
The sixth chapter: In order to observe Mr. Blake more easily, “I” took up the residence in a place near Mr. Blake’s house. “I” followed him everyday and observed his whereabouts. But “I” couldn’t get any useful information to help “me” solve the case .Until one day, “I” saw Mr. Blake talking with a girl. “I” thought the girl maybe a good clue and then followed her. “I” saw that she tore away from a box of garbage and left. “I” found a bit of calico hanging to the box and it was same with the calico frock the girl wore. “I” thought maybe it was another new clue.
