Abstract
With the drastic development of the Internet and the increasing number of Internet users, Chinese Internet buzzwords have mushroomed in large numbers and become more and more popular. Internet buzzwords reflect the events and problems of the society and the life style and thinking pattern of people in a country during a certain period. Since the deepened reform and opening-up and china’s rising global role and strong international impact, more and more foreigners expect to have an understanding about China. As a sort of the mirror of the contemporary China, internet buzzwords are unavoidably attracted the eyes of foreigners. Affected by factors like cultural gap and different thinking pattern, it is difficult for foreigners to grasp the essence of the Internet buzzwords and can even cause communication barriers. Therefore, the translations of internet buzzwords become important and urgent problems.
This thesis attempts to discuss and improve related translation methods of Chinese Internet buzzwords from the perspective of functional equivalence theory which was presented by a famous American translation theorist, Eugene A. Nida. The purpose of the thesis is to improve the quality of the translation version and to promote the cultural communications between China and foreign countries and provide a new angle for other researchers to study the Chinese internet buzzwords’ translation.
