Abstract
News transediting consists of “translating” and “editing”. On the one hand, authenticity, the inherent feature of the news, decides that the editors should express the context as accurately as possible, which can be called “seeking common ground”. On the other hand, the editors need to process and even reconstruct the source language considering the social and cultural background from different countries, namely “preserving differences”. Such discrepancy determines the application of the translation strategy of seeking common ground while preserving differences. The strategy is not only of great use to English-Chinese sports news transediting, but also it is crucial to bridge the communication between different cultures. Currently, as Sino-foreign cultural exchanges become increasingly interconnected, media and sports news are more closely interwoven with each other and Chinese readers attach closer attention to domestic and foreign sports news, especially the Summer Olympic Games that is held every four year. This thesis will discuss the adaption practices with respect to the 31th Rio Olympics from the perspective of seeking common ground while preserving differences, which will be helpful to the subsequent sports news transediting.
