Abstract:Proverbs are short, simple and meaningful phrases commonly used by people. They originated from life and are highly concentrated expressions of national language and culture. Proverbs reflect a country’s geographical location, historical background, religious beliefs and other cultural backgrounds. They are deeply rooted in the cognitive structure of the nation and embody the cognitive foundation of the nation. The definition of a proverb in a dictionary is a concise folk wisdom maxim that usually includes vivid images and unforgettable rhythms. The use of animal images in proverbs is very common. Due to cultural differences in geographical location, folkways, religious beliefs, and modes of thinking, Chinese-English animal proverbs have different national cultural characteristics and cultural information, and are closely related to cultural traditions. This article analyzes the animal images in English and Chinese proverbs to understand the cultural differences between English and Chinese.
