Abstract: Sherlock Holmes, a classic figure in Arthur Conan Doyle’s works, is favored by many playwrights. In past several years, Elementary shot by CBS and Sherlock shot by BBC have recreated the new icons of Sherlock Holmes. These two TV series move the background to modern time, which brings a fresh look to us. Based on the original works, the two TV series with different styles have attracted huge attention among the fans. In this paper, the comparison of Holmes from different angles in two TV series will be further discussed, such as the characterization of Sherlock, the relationship between Sherlock and other characters, and the way Sherlock deals with crimes. This paper analyzes the causes of differences between two TV series. The Sherlock in British version is closer to the original work, which makes this version highly acclaimed. American version subverts some characters of this TV series and wins a good reputation. Due to two intrinsically different cultures of the two countries and understandings of the original works, two TV series have different styles of creating stories and different characterization.
