Abstract: Euphemism is a common phenomenon in language and culture. It plays an important role in people’s daily communication and is used to make conversation more smooth and successful without losing speaker’s face. Based on Grice’s Cooperative Principle, Leech put forward his famous Politeness Principle which is an important principle in pragmatics. It contains six maxims: Tact Maxim, Generosity Maxim, Approbation Maxim, Modesty Maxim, Agreement Maxim and Sympathy Maxim. These maxims prove effectively that people sometimes violate Grice’s Cooperative Principle deliberately for the purpose of politeness. This paper tries to make a clear research about the relationship between the application of euphemism and Politeness Principle, and prove that the application of euphemism adheres to Politeness Principle.
