Abstract: The Apple Tree is a famous novel written by John Galsworthy. The description of the environment, romantic plots and Ashurst’s struggle in making love decision leave a deep impression on readers. However, the novel’s criticism of the society, the bourgeoisie and the humanity are the key factors for its success. This paper, based on Carl Jung’s Archetypal Theory—the Anima, the Shadow and the Persona, makes a psychological analysis of Ashurst, trying to unveil the ugliness of the bourgeoisie, to reveal the absence of humanity and to emphasize the society’s profound influences on individuals.
