Sons and Lovers is Laurence's masterpiece and his autobiographical novels. Whether from the subject of creation or expression present obvious anti-traditional consciousness, it marked the advent of modern British literature entered the heyday. Interpersonal function theory is an important part of systemic functional linguistics, and speech act theory is an important part of pragmatics.
By combining the two studies, the relationship between the characters can be known. At first, Mr. Morel and Mrs. Morel actually love each other. But after many years, their relationship becomes bad. Their love becomes mendacious. Because Mrs. Morel hates her husband, she give all her love to his son. Their relationship is not between mother and son. She let her son become a Oedipus complex man. And Paul love Miriam in spirit. From the analysis, the character of the main characters in the novel can also be reflected. Mr. Morel was a humorous and active man when he was young, but after married, he becomes rough and heartless. Mrs. Morel was a shy and subtle girl when she was young, but because of her husband, she becomes brave and strong but hopeless. Paul is a stickler but timid man. He is a sentimentalist. From this study, more about Sons and Lovers can be known.
