Abstract:This thesis discusses the translation techniques of addition and omission from the perspective of the theory of redundancy. Redundant information plays an indispensable role in effective communication. Lack or excess of redundancy will spoil the effectiveness of communication. The thesis makes a careful and detailed analysis of the application and function of addition and omission in translation from the perspective of the theory of redundancy. Firstly, it introduces theory of redundancy, and then it discusses in detail the techniques of addition and omission involving four types of redundancy: syntactic, semantic, rhetorical and cultural, followed by a conclusion and suggestions.

In conclusion , it is known that every language contains redundancy, but the amount of redundancy required or allowed in a particular case varies from language to language. So in the translation between Chinese and English, it is necessary to add or omit some words based on the theory of redundancy. If the target language requires or allows more redundancy than the source language, addition is required. On the other hand, if the target language requires less redundancy than the source language, omission will be possible or necessary. Besides, addition and omission are indeed the very important skills the translator should master. Firstly, addition does not mean that translators can add any linguistic unit at will, but they should add some linguistic unit that is implied but not expressed obviously in the original text. As a matter of fact, it does not add anything else except those express the original thought of the text. Secondly, omission seems to omit some linguistic unit, but it does not neglect any part of the original text. By omission, the target version omits the redundant information and also becomes more concise and precise under the condition of keeping the spirit of the original text. Last but not least, addition and omission are fairly necessary skills so that the version can convey the essence of the original text as close as possible. However, the proficient master of the addition and omission is not far enough. The master of other translate skills and genral knowledge are also of great significance. In many cases, a good version will not be realized if the translator does not have adequate knowledge of the subject and the relevant background.
