Abstract:Address terms are an indispensable part of people’s daily life and literary works. Based on the previous study on address terms conducted by scholars home and abroad, address terms can be divided into two categories, namely, kinship address terms and social address terms. The differences in culture, language and society lead to tremendous discrepancies between Chinese and English address terms, which poses a big challenge for the translation of address terms. This thesis mainly discusses the cultural differences between Chinese and English and the translation of address terms. A comparison of Chinese and English address terms is made from the aspect of kinship address terms and social address terms. Cultural differences greatly influence the translation of address terms. This thesis provides useful guidance for overcoming cultural barriers in translating address terms.
