Abstract:Idiom is the carrier of culture, and idiom is the essence of language and culture. Idioms contain a large number of rich cultural connotations and cultural features. It reflects the vivid local features of different cultures of Western and Eastern countries. Animals are human beings’ friends from ancient times; therefore they have a very close relationship with human beings. People know many characteristics of animals in the long-term development of history. The characteristics of animals have a great impact on humans’ daily life. Thus there are some animal-related idioms which have abundant cultural connotations existing in human life. However, owing to the different backgrounds between eastern and western cultures, such as economic development, geographical conditions, folk customs and religion etc., people from eastern and western countries may have different attitudes toward the same animal. Therefore some animal-related idioms come into being both in English and Chinese, which have different cultural connotations. These cultural discrepancies can be divided into two kinds. One is the animal-related idioms which have the similar cultural connotations in English and Chinese. The other is the animal-related idioms which have the different cultural connotations in English and Chinese. In the process of cross-cultural communication, only when people understand eastern and western cultural differences exactly, can they have a better understanding. A good translation should be based on a good understanding of the cultural meaning of the source language. This thesis aims at making a comprehensive research about the understanding of animal-related idioms in English from a perspective of cultural discrepancies.
