Abstract:Extracurricular reading is beneficial for improving English comprehensive ability. Recently, some scholars and teachers have researched from different perspectives based on the out-of-class extensive English reading of college students’. The relevant researches on the situation of college English majors’ out-of-class extensive reading in underdeveloped areas of west China are relatively few. To better know about and improve the teaching and learning proficiency of after-class reading, the author has carried out a survey on the situation of English majors’ out-of-class extensive reading at Honghe University by quantitative method and qualitative method. The research results show: 1) Most of the English majors have positive attitude towards the importance of out-of-class extensive English reading and their readings are purposeful; 2) Most English majors read a little after class, especially in reading original works; and the sources of out-of-class extensive reading are mainly from internet. 3) Most of the students have not a lot of obstacles during the process of out-of-class extensive English reading, and the biggest obstacle in reading is the English vocabulary. 4) Most of the English majors have common understanding on the functions of out-of-class extensive English reading. After investigating and researching, English teachers and majors have a general understanding of the situation of English majors’ out-of-class extensive reading at Honghe University, which will broaden their horizon of English teaching and learning.

摘要:大量的阅读对提高英语语言能力是非常有用的。近年来,不少学者对大学生英语课外阅读情况以及如何指导学生进行英语课外阅读等方面开展了不少研究,而对于西部欠发达地区英语专业大学生的英语课外阅读相关研究较少,为了更好地了解西部地方高校英语专业学生对课外阅读的认识和阅读基本情况,作者以XX学院为个案采用问卷和访谈相结合的方法进行了调查研究。研究结果表明:(1)大部分英语专业学生对英语课外阅读的重要性持积极态度,且阅读目的性强;(2)大部分学生阅读材料来源单一,且课外阅读量不大,在原著方面尤为突出;(3)大部分学生在课外阅读中最大的障碍是生词量;(4)大部分学生认同课外阅读对提高英语综合水平有促进作用。本研究结果丰富了英语教师和学生对课外阅读现状的认识,对于学生树立正确的学习观、教师探索更加有效的英语课外阅读方法予一定的启示。
