Abstract: The Waves is a masterpiece of Virginia Woolf, the great English novelist, regarded by many critics as one of the finest English novels of 20th century. The story compares the rise and fall of the sun and waves to ups and downs in life. At the beginning of 20th century, capitalism developed faster into imperialism which caused the world war, the damage of nature, and the tension of human relations. Under such circumstances, Woolf realized that the environment was being damaged by anthropocentrism with her extraordinary insight. This novel has presented an important ecological thought in the investigation of human and nature. The ultimate relationship between human and nature should be a united one, so human must respect nature and live harmoniously with it. Generally speaking, her ecological awareness in The Waves can be summarized as a pursuit for harmony and balance of ecology from three aspects: natural, social and spiritual ecology. These ecological thoughts are of great significance towards us thinking of ecological problems, adjusting the relationship between human and nature, and solving the survival crisis that we are faced with.
