Abstract: The French Lieutenant’s Woman is the masterpiece of John Fowles which describes the experience of the heroine who is low in social position but strong-willed to fight against social conventions for freedom. The novel uses postmodern techniques which greatly challenge and subvert the traditional ways of thinking. After giving an introduction to The French Lieutenant’s woman and postmodernism, this thesis then discusses the use of postmodern elements from the aspects of intertextuality and the open-ending. At last, it analyzes the significance of postmodern elements from the aspects of theme and narrative.

摘要：《法国中尉的女人》是约翰·福尔斯的代表作。故事讲述了是一位地位卑下而性格倔强的女子向社会、向传统习俗作抗争，努力获取自由的经历。小说通过运用互文、开放式的结尾等具有后现代特点的创作手法，向传统文学的创作手法发起了挑战，体现出具有颠覆性的解构思维模式。本文首先对《法国中尉的女人》及后现代主义进行简要介绍，然后从小说的互文性和结局对后现代元素的运用进行分析，最后从这本小说主题和叙事手法上分析后现代元素的意义。
