ABSTRACT:Martin Eden is the autobiographical novel of Jack London, who is an important writer of the critical realism in the history of American Literature. The main plot of the story is made up, but the hero of the novel is closely connected with the life and creation of Jack London and even Martin Eden’s world-weary suicide predicted the tragic ending of the writer. Martin Eden is a self-portrait of Jack London. The author endows the hero with his own life experiences and the efforts made to be a writer. However, they didn’t receive the recognition from the so-called upper society, also they were isolated completely from the low class which they belonged to by the time success was coming upon them. Complete soberness and desperation are what their dream brings, so death is inevitable. In this process, the change of Martin Eden’s characters plays the big role.

摘 要:杰克·伦敦是美国文学史上一位重要的批判现实主义作家, 《马丁· 伊登》是他的自传体小说。 尽管主要故事情节是虚构的，但是主人公与作家本人的生活与艺术有着密切的联系，就连马丁最后的厌世自杀也预见了作家悲剧性的结局。马丁·伊登就是杰克·伦敦的自画像。作家赋予了主人公自己的生活经历以及为实现作家梦所做出的努力。然而当成功到来时，他们不仅没有被所谓的上层社会所接受，还彻底脱离了自己所属的大众阶层。他们所梦想的成功带来的只是彻彻底底的清醒和绝望，于是死亡就在所难免。而在这一过程中，马丁·伊登性格的变化起了很大的作用。
