Abstract:Toni Morrison, an American black novelist, won the Nobel Prize in 1993. She is successful because she becomes the first black female novelist who wins the Nobel Prize.
Among all of her works, Beloved is the most famous one. The novel takes an infanticide story as its main tread, and deeply exposes the odiousness of slavery and the terrible trauma left by the slavery in mind of the Black. With the remarkable use of all kinds of writing skills, Morrison brings this novel a deep theme. The use of symbolism of this novel causes many foreign and domestic scholars to study.
This thesis aims to analyze the symbolism of settings and figures in Beloved. The study of symbolism in Beloved aims to expose the repression and trauma from which Blacks suffered under the slavery as well as the course of the Blacks’ self-searching. Meanwhile, this paper tries to probe the freedom and identity of the Blacks.
