Abstract: Based on Paul Grice’s cooperative principle, this study intends to explore      Chinese-English translation of public signs. This paper analyzes the different features between Chinese and English public signs and different functions of public signs, in order to apply cooperative principle to Chinese-English translation of public signs. It is pointed out that the four rules of cooperative principle ---- the maxim of quality, quantity, relevance, and manner can provide a better guidance to public signs.

摘要：本文以合作原则为基础，对公示语的汉英翻译做出研究。为了将合作原则运用到公示语的汉英翻译中，本文分析了英汉公示语的不同语言特点和公示语的不同功能。文章指出，合作原则的四条准则，即质量准则、数量准则、关系准则和方式准则，能为公示语的汉英翻译做出更好的指导。
