Abstract:Idioms, as a special form of language, exist in culture and reflect cultural differences. They have fixed patterns and abundant connotations. Metaphors in idioms are extremely difficult for translators and English learners to comprehend because of the culture embodied in them. Therefore, how to properly do intercultural translation turns out to be an indispensable skill. In this thesis, the translation of metaphors in idioms will be discussed on the foundation of introducing the definition, features, similarities and differences of metaphors in idioms. Meanwhile, a series of principles and methods of idiom translation will be put forward.

In conclusion, metaphors are crystal of human thoughts, the fruits of human wisdom and an important tool of social intercourse. Idioms in both English and Chinese metaphors reflect the valuable cultures of these two nations. Through the analysis of cultural differences between English and Chinese metaphors in idioms, we can see that cultural background plays a very important role for English learners and translators. It is recommended that more endeavors are demanded to do a systematic and comprehensive study on this topic, and if we do so, it is bound to have a brighter future for the promotion of cultural exchange between English and Chinese nations.
