摘要：托马斯·哈代的《德伯家的苔丝》是最能体现他“性格与环境小说“的重要代表作品。历年来，苔丝的悲剧命运是人们关注的重点，而她悲剧命运的成因也是人们讨论的重点。本文旨在从苔丝以及安琪儿的人物性格中，去探寻苔丝悲剧命运的必然性和相关性。试图梳理出怎样的性格造成了苔丝不幸的一生，以及这些性格是如何推进苔丝命运的发展的。

Abstract: "Tess" written by Thomas Hardy is the book that can best represent his idea -- "characteristic and surroundings novel". For years, the tragic fate of Tess has become the center of the discussion, and so does the cause of that fate. This paper mainly searches for the necessity and relevance of the fate about Tess through the study of Tess and Angel's characters. Furthermore, the paper tries to figure out the particular character which causes the misfortune of Tess, and the role it acts throughout the life of Tess.
